"IMAGES YOU CAN FEEL"

I have always been obsessed with documenting life through a lens. When my first son was born (14 yrs. ago) I took things a step further and started to really learn how to creatively capture moments. I studied everything I could get my hands on and that was when I started to understand the science of light.

My children's first years were so magical to me, all I ever wanted to be in life was a Mom. I had a hard time believing and trusting that all my dreams had come true. The idea that this time was going by so fast made me want to hang on to every second even tighter. Somehow I felt that if I had a photo of each moment, I could actually freeze time. Well my boy's are 14 and 11 now so obviously I couldn't really freeze time, but when I look back at those photos... I am taken back to those moments again. I can actually hear their giggles, screams and babbles of nonsense. I can smell Johnson's baby shampoo, desitin, and strained carrots. So for me it is the next best thing to actually freezing time (and it really is my only choice). Because of this, I strive to catch those "real moments" that do evoke such memories in all of our senses.

My eyes and heart are trained on the little things others may overlook. Do I take way too many pictures of my own children, you bet I do. Do I take way too many pictures at every family session? You bet I do. Do I have to wade through hundreds of shots to get the ones that will move you to tears? You bet I do. Would I change a thing? Not for anything in the world.

An important milestone reached in a special family… Philadelphia family photographer

And no, I don’t do events…. This was an exception, Stephen’s mom is one of my oldest (not age) friends and I have known this family since I was in my early teens. In fact I have known Stephen since he was a baby, and have many embarrassing stories I could tell (but I won’t do that to you, Stephen). Stephen did a great job, and made his whole family very proud and the incredible party was everything the family hoped for! I personally had a great time, and was honored to play a part in this very special time in your life. Congrats Stephen!!!

Am I the only one who gets the chills from this??? Philadelphia child and family photographer

Ok, I admit this has absolutely nothing to do with photography… Admission number 2… I’m a huge Oprah fan, always have been. Confession… When I was younger (in my late teens even) I actually thought I might have a shot at being Oprah (specifically the first Jewish Oprah). Well, that didn’t happen… yet. I do believe I have the second best job in the world so I’m really ok with my ultimate dream not coming true quite yet. As a huge fan of Oprah, there are many a day that I am editing away while Oprah is keeping me company and the day this aired was no exception. I watched it, with chills and I’m embarrassed to admit a few tears. I just love Oprah’s reaction to it, so real, so Oprah!!! Watch it and let me know if any of you feel the same or if I really have gone off the deep end…

Dreams do come true… Philadelphia newborn and maternity photography

I just loved watching these two expectant parents together (and no, not just because of his muscles). What I saw besides their obvious outside beauty was all of their hopes and dreams being realized, the excitement of knowing that your world is about to change forever and mostly how much this father to be absolutely adores his wife. I mean, I don’t think I have actually ever seen anything like it. He so clearly finds this pregnancy magical and his wife’s changing body to be a miracle and totally beautiful. Wow, I’m so excited for the newborn session already! Did I mention she is pregnant with twins!!! These two babies are going to the luckiest little ones around with such loving, happy parents. Enjoy your sneak peak! Life as you know it is about to change for the better!!!

Aspiring actress updates her head shot! Philadelphia commercial and children’s photographer

This young lady is just oozing talent, in fact I have already been contacted by some of my “connections” inquiring about this vivacious young lady (and it’s easy to see why). She is so comfortable in front of the camera, and her eyes really speak to you. I love when you can really capture the depth of a person through their eyes, especially someone so young. I have a feeling we have a major star on our hands here!

a brand new toy for Mr. H; or so he thinks…. Main Line baby photographer

Seriously, I’m not sure I have ever seen a big brother so enamored with his new little sister! “H” is going to be a big help, I can just tell already. “H” will take over most major jobs like putting little “M”s fingers in his mouth, and rocking her especially while he is on her back, I’m sure he is going to help dress her up (as long as no hats are involved). Just about the only thing he isn’t likely to do is share his “b” with her. I had the pleasure of documenting this wonderful transition in the “P” families life and here are some of my favorites from out session last week.

Vacation pictures of my own family, and photo tips for photographers / Philadelphia, main line family photographer…

Well, I’m back from vacation and really wondering why I live in such a cold climate? Aside from the obvious enjoyment of spending some time in the tropics in the middle of the frigid winter, spending time with family, catching up on some reading, and not having to cook anything for anyone, my favorite thing about vacation is getting to turn my lens on my own kids for a change. Every winter break we go away with out brother and sister in law, and niece and nephew, this year we chose Jamaica. It’s great for the cousins to get to spend a whole week connected at the hip, it is really a special time for them. I also enjoy getting to experiment a little with new lighting techniques, and my children are willing subjects (NOT) once I bribe them accordingly. This year the bribe was allowing them to buy new apps for their itouch.

PHOTO TIPS, FOR PHOTOGRAPHER FRIENDS AND FOLLOWERS… I get about 8-10 emails per week with technical questions from other photographers and photo enthusiasts
For all my photographer friends out their, one of my new years resolution’s was to give some photo tips and insight into how I shoot more often on my blog so this is for you… My mission was to balance the gorgeous sky at dusk with the proper exposure on my subject so several nights I went out at around 6pm to take advantage of the setting sun. I exposed my camera for the sky( very slow shutter speed) and used my flash on manual mode (set at a very low output level) to expose the subject properly. One of the biggest obstacles was getting the focus right, when I could barely see them. Obviously the camera couldn’t focus at all so I had to manually focus, what I ended up doing was using my iphone to light their face so I could achieve focus and then asking them to pull it away so I could take the shot without the obvious iphone glare. An example of my settings on the moonlit image is, ISO 1000, aperture 2.8, shutter speed 1/30 (I have a pretty steady hand) and my focal length was 100, my flash set to manual also was at 1/4 power.
